Our NES Principal

Megan Desmarais

Megan Desmarais became the new Principal of Northfield Elementary School on July 1, 2016. Her career in public education began in 1992 as an Instructional Assistant at Smith College Campus School in Northampton. Next she was a grade four teacher at West Elementary School in Plymouth, MA. For the past eighteen years, she has taught grade four at Deerfield Elementary School. Ms. Desmarais graduated from Bridgewater State University with a B.S. in Education. She has a Master’s Degree in Education from Curry College and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from American International College with a major in School Leadership. Ms. Desmarais lives in South Deerfield.

On July 1st, 2016, Mrs. Desmarais officially became the new Principal of NES. However, she was involved with the PTO and getting to learn more about NES long before that. Megan attended the May 2016 PTO meeting, Playground Committee meeting and Fundraising Committee meeting in addition to attending the Spring Carnival & Fun Run in May 2016. Since she has become Principal, Megan has helped the children put toppings on their ice cream at the 2016 Welcome Back to School Ice Cream Social, talked with parents at the 2016 Welcome Breakfast and she has attended every PTO meeting providing a detailed Principal’s report. Megan has demonstrated an open line of communication with the PTO and is always available when needed.  Welcome Mrs. Desmarais!  It is wonderful to have you here at NES!

A message from our new Principal…

My name is Megan Desmarais and it is truly an honor to introduce myself as your new principal! I am thrilled to join Northfield Elementary School, similar to that of Deerfield Elementary where I spent the past 18 years as a 4th grade teacher. The small town and tight-knit community that Northfield offers is what drew me to NES, but it didn’t take long to realize just how special this school really is. My husband and I recently enjoyed a beautiful day at the Fun Run and Spring Carnival. What an impressive event! There, I met many teachers, students, parents, and community members who were all so positive, supportive, and welcoming. I know I made the right choice.

As an educator for over 23 years, and a parent of two daughters, ages 17 and 19, I understand the value of building strong home-school connections. Families play a critical role in supporting students’ educational experiences. My belief is that all children can learn and grow when provided a safe learning environment in which adults and students respect each other’s unique qualities. I am eager to begin working with staff, students, and families at NES to provide a positive experience for everyone. Communication is essential to the success of any school so please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or would just like to introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting you.
